With international Father’s Day less than three weeks away, now is the perfect time to plan a fantastic day in for the man who brings so much wisdom and laughter to your family. While masculinity is much more than just tough and rugged these days, it is still hard to find a guy-movie that does not involve fights or guns, but here are our top picks of the best father-related movies that give all of us something special.
Yedinci Kogustaki Mucize / Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2019)
A heart-warming remake of the wildly popular 2013 South Korean movie of the same name, this movie is a crowd pleaser for everyone. It tells the story of a little girl who is determined to prove that her mentally disabled father is innocent after he is wrongly accused of causing the death of an immensely powerful general’s kid. While the South Korean version is more a drama comedy, the Turkish adaptation takes viewers on an emotional rollercoaster ride from start to finish.
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
Inspired by a true story, Will Smith plays the part of Chris Gardner, a San Francisco salesman who is struggling to build a better future for himself and his five-year old son. After his girlfriend walks out, Chris is left to raise Christopher (played by Will Smith’s biological son, Jaden) on his own. Using his determination, Chris finally gets an unpaid internship in a competitive stockbroker training programme, but without a salary he is forced to vacate his apartment and is homeless. Refusing to let go without a fight, Chris finally rises above his obstacles to become a Wall Street legend.
Field of Dreams (1989)
An iconic movie, Field of Dreams tells a story that blends the perfect mix of fairy tale, baseball and family togetherness. Kevin Costner plays the part of Iowan farmer Ray Kinsella, who keeps hearing strange voices commanding him to build a baseball diamond in his cornfields. After relentlessly trying to ignore the voices, Ray finally builds, but nothing happens. After a semester abroad in Europe, George Bank’s oldest daughter tells the family that she is engaged and ready to get married. Shocked to hear this news, and how much the wedding will cost, the father’s crazy antics in preparation for the big day will surely brings tears and laughter to everyone.
The Tree of Life (2011)
Created from the mind of acclaimed director Terrence Malik, this movie tells the story of a Midwestern family in the 1950s. Played by Hollywood heavyweights such as Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, the film follows the journey of the eldest son through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile his complicated relationship with his father. Through Malick’s signature imagery, the movie shows how brute nature and spiritual grace can shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all of life.
