Situated only 30 minutes away from Ubud, Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape embodies the group’s vision and commitment to creating immersive experiences by combining deep nature and sustainable design. With 16 balés and an innovative no walls, no doors philosophy implemented throughout the resort, this adults-only destination invites guests to experience a new way of being.
Located in Buahan Kaja Village’s off-the-beaten-path area, the resort maximises natural light exposure through its design and offerings, fostering a space where visitors, aged 18 and up, can connect to disconnect. Reinventing the basics of food, sleep and in-resort interaction, the brand aims to bring guests on a rewilding renewal through immersion in nature. Distinct indoor/outdoor living offers a sanctuary for urban detox, self-introspection and emotional awareness in privacy.
Paying the most respect to the surroundings, the creation of this resort minimises the use of heavy machinery. Led by Gede Kresna, a recognised sustainable local architect who focused on Balinese design and environmentally friendly architecture, each balé was sensitively situated to preserve existing trees and its panoramic viewscape.
Additionally, to honour Indonesian architecture and craftsmanship, each balé was also built and decorated using re-purposed Ulin wood salvaged from old boat jetties in Kalimantan brought by the beam as the main structure and flooring of the villas. Inside the balé, living room daybeds and armchairs were commissioned from teak wood, while traditionally woven rattan mats anchored the living, sleeping and bathing spaces.
The heart of the resort is the Open Kitchen and Living Room, both open dining and lounge spaces created to evoke a sense of community. Here, guests are invited to learn about the resort’s unique zero-waste farm-to-table concept, local sourcing philosophy and heritage techniques, and the celebration of authentic local cuisine and cultures. The Botanist Bar is centred around the use of locally grown natural ingredients and botanicals infused into its beverages. The menu concept, 70 percent of which is plant-based, is sourced locally within a one-hour drive from the property.
For those seeking adventure, Buahan offers a plethora of outdoor activities. A calendar of daily, weekly and monthly events guides travellers towards a range of curated and self-led experiences around the three pillars of connecting to nature, a discovery experience and community integration. From the on and off-site daily Happenings activities to collaborative events with visiting practitioners or local cultural festivities, the ethos of unique, rejuvenating and spontaneous opportunities for discovery holds firm and is a core of the brand experience.
Meanwhile, for relaxation, head down to the resort’s Toja Spa which celebrates the wellbeing traditions of Buahan village and its surrounding areas with a unique open garden. It offers spiritual and active wellness involving local Balinese healers and a specialist, enhancing the spa experience through a local tradition and wellbeing philosophy.
