Celebrating Local Culture with Artistic Guest Experiences

Padma Hotels enhances the guest experience by collaborating with local artists from Yogyakarta, Bali and Bandung. Through creative illustrations on key cards and greeting cards, the hotels celebrate Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage, adding a unique touch to their renowned hospitality.

Padma Hotels, a prominent Indonesian hotel brand with five properties across the country, takes great pride in integrating design, service and local culture into every aspect of its hospitality. Each Padma Hotel, with its modern contemporary style, top-notch service and distinctive facilities, embodies these core principles. Recently, four of these properties –Padma Hotel Semarang, Padma Resort Legian, Padma Resort Ubud and Padma Hotel Bandung – partnered with Mata Angin agency to collaborate with talented local artists from Yogyakarta, Bali and Bandung. This collaboration brings unique, creative illustrations to guest key cards and greeting cards, enhancing the guest experience with a touch of local artistry.

The collaboration began at Padma Hotel Semarang with the creative works of the Yogyakarta-based duo, Indiguerillas. They reimagined the well-known Javanese tale of the Punakawan in a modern contemporary style. Their artwork features three Punakawan characters – Petruk Kanthong Bolong, Nala Gareng and Bagong – in a joyful jejogedan (dancing) pose, symbolising happiness as they hold the key to Padma Hotel Semarang. This artwork reflects a wish for guests to find joy and create memorable experiences during their stay. Padma Hotel Semarang also displays numerous other artworks by prominent Indonesian artists, such as Wayan Novi’s Abstraksi Candi Borobudur and Angki Purbandono’s Dugderan, welcoming guests with captivating visuals from the moment they arrive.

Continuing the theme of local cultural narratives, the Balinese rendition of the Punakawan tale is embraced by Kuncir Sathya Viku for Padma Resort Legian and Padma Resort Ubud. Viku’s adaptation introduces unique characters and iconic Balinese elements. His artwork features Sangut, a cheerful figure flying a kite amidst lush rice terraces, and Tualen and Merdah, who are seen exploring Bali on a scooter. Delem, another character, is depicted surfing on Bali’s famous waves, symbolising the island’s adventurous spirit. Viku, hailing from Bali himself, aims to use his art to introduce Bali’s rich culture and traditions to a broader audience.

In Bandung, Padma Hotel Bandung collaborated with artist Addy Debil to reimagine the beloved wayang golek puppet character, Cepot. Known for his wit and humour, Cepot perfectly complements Debil’s playful, colourful, and imaginative style. Debil’s artwork portrays Cepot engaging in activities synonymous with Bandung: enjoying culinary delights, shopping and hiking. Debil’s previous collaborations with Padma Hotel Semarang, particularly at Goolali Gelato Bar & Patisserie, have brought cheer and vibrancy to the hotel’s decor and packaging, contributing to the popular #TravelwithGoolali trend.

This artistic collaboration between Padma Hotels and Mata Angin agency not only adds a unique and creative touch to the guest experience but also highlights the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia. By partnering with local artists, Padma Hotels celebrates and preserves local traditions, offering guests a deeper connection to the destinations they visit.
