Mbaka Satitik Exhibition at John Hardy Boutique and Gallery

Mbaka Satitik by Sebastianus Hartanto

John Hardy Boutique and Gallery in Seminyak, Bali, was proud to present a captivating solo exhibition by artist-in-residence A. Sebastianus Hartanto, titled Mbaka Satitik: Ritualization of From. Running from 8 June to 30 September 2024, this exhibition offers a unique exploration of memory through the combined mediums of photography and traditional Javanese batik.

Hartanto’s innovative works, which he refers to as studies, delve into the essence of being by layering pixelated image particles – representations of his memories and personal artefacts – onto cloth. These particles are then waxed over and immersed in dye, creating intricate batik patterns. This process, which Hartanto describes as Mbaka Satitik – meaning from one point to another – symbolises the journey of time and memory, with each dot (titik) of batik representing a specific moment or particle of his existence.

The exhibition also introduces visitors to the four transformative rites of passage in the batik process, each symbolising a stage of metamorphosis: Nyuci (purification), Nyanting (meditation/contemplation), Nyelup (absorption) and Nglorod (sublimation). Through these rites, Hartanto reclaims and revitalises the ancient tradition of ritualising craft, elevating the art of batik to a sacred act of memory preservation.

In addition to the exhibition, the gallery hosts a series of events, including a hands-on batik workshop, an artist talk with Hartanto and various social gatherings. These events aim to foster a deeper appreciation for art and Indonesian culture, bringing the community together in celebration of creativity and tradition.
