An exhibition of local tradition cemented itself in the lobby of Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach.
In conjunction with its sense of Balinese pride, Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach is always excited to tell the story of the island’s people to those around the world. The sacred Balinese holiday Galungan provided a terrific opportunity for the hotel to commemorate just that by inviting Balinese artist and master weaver Nano Uhero to showcase his unique style of weaving, called “radical weaving,” to create a sculpture for the hotel’s Neighbourhood Gallery in the lobby.
The creation is called the Gentle Monster, a fictional creature made from hundreds of recycled plastic belts to represent the duality of industrialisation and technology. Nano Uhero believes this use of the material is a conscious way to reuse the threat to our ecosystem, plastic, and hopes to give hope that additional methods of its secondhand use will be inspired by his work. The Gentle Monster represents the possibility of overcoming difficult ecological challenges through art and community.
The installation is now present for all guests to see, as a brilliant display of craftsmanship to celebrate the local tradition. Weaving is a large influence of Balinese artistry, dating back centuries, in the form of canang sari and daily offerings weaved from banana leaves to woven architecture and textiles.
