The Visionary Behind Guest Satisfaction
Currently serving as the General Manager of Mangkuluhur ARTOTEL SUITES, Andreas Kahl assures his clients that they will receive only the highest level of service, thanks to his extensive work experience in the hospitality business and his strong commitment to the field. His leadership style prioritises open communication and collaboration, fostering a supportive environment that empowers his team to excel.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about being a general manager?
A: What I love most about being a general manager is that no two days are the same. Each day brings fresh challenges that demand creative thinking. Working with people worldwide, whether they’re guests or part of my team, truly makes this my dream job.
Q: What is your leadership style, and how do you apply it to your role right now?
A: I believe in an open-door approach, where no one needs an appointment to discuss issues. If there’s a problem, I want to know about it right away. My priority is to support my team in overcoming challenges and finding solutions that benefit our guests, the team and all stakeholders. I trust my team to go above and beyond when provided with the tools they need to work efficiently. When my team feels supported, their positive attitude naturally enhances the guest experience.
Q: What is your proudest accomplishment in your career?
A: That’s a tough one. Being appointed general manager at just 30 felt like an outstanding achievement, although I’ve known inspiring leaders who reached that milestone even younger. However, I’m most proud when former colleagues apply to work with me again. That’s the greatest affirmation of my work and leadership.
Q: How do you balance the demands of your professional life with your personal life?
A: Living on-site at the hotel offers excellent advantages for achieving that balance. I cherish the moments when my little son stops by my office to say “Hello” or when I can enjoy a meal with my family, especially since mornings and evenings can be pretty hectic. However, weekends are reserved for family time, and we always try to do something enjoyable together or travel out of town.
Q: What key differences have you observed regarding guest expectations and operational practices?
A: Due to the casual atmosphere in economy hotels, I found it easier to connect with guests. In contrast, upscale hotels demand a greater focus on details and accuracy. Additionally, the streamlined operations in European economy hotels mean less staff and broader responsibilities, which ultimately helped me gain valuable insights and experience that benefitted my career when I transitioned back to mid- and upscale hotels.
Q: Given your extensive experience working in various Indonesian cities, how do you believe your deep understanding of local culture, market dynamics and consumer preferences will contribute to the success of this hotel?
A: Indonesia’s market dynamics are fascinating, and my experiences in Bandung, Lombok, Bali and now Jakarta have provided me with valuable insights into local culture and travel demands. We’re currently developing some exciting offers that will leverage the expertise of our Sales, Marketing and Revenue teams. I’m confident my experience will significantly contribute to the success of Mangkuluhur ARTOTEL Suites Jakarta.
