The 18th edition of the Asian Games will be held in Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra, this year, the second time that Indonesia has hosted the prestigious sporting event in its history, the first time being in Jakarta as the sole host city. In anticipation of the 2018 Asian Games, the sporting infrastructure of both provinces has been the main focus of the Chairman of the Asian Games Steering Committee, Jusuf Kalla. Visitors to Indonesia have been suitably impressed by the state-of-the-art sporting arenas as well as the transport infrastructure built to support the event.
Since the first Asian Games, the list of events has expanded to include 35 sporting events as well as seven non-Olympic sports. The most popular events include football, basketball, tennis and badminton. Aside from the sporting events, there are also martial arts events such as kabaddi and karate, as well as card games such as bridge.
