Bali Island School’s Transformative Initiatives In 2023

Bali Island School (BIS) culminated its year with a series of impactful initiatives, underscoring its steadfast dedication to fostering positive change and sustainability within its community. Anchored in the core of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP), the ethos of Service as Action catalyses collaborative endeavours, empowering students to evolve into compassionate individuals effecting meaningful change in society and the environment.

Embracing the essence of humanity, BIS’ Giving Forward group orchestrated a commendable effort, rallying support for Bali’s disabled community. The collection drive encompassed an array of essentials including kids’ toys, health provisions, shower kits, snacks, meals, stationery, clothing and footwear. Concurrently, the spirited efforts of the Santa’s Little Helpers student group resonated profoundly as they mobilised resources the Bali Street Mums organisation, catering to the health needs of impoverished women and children in Denpasar.

The legacy of People’s Perpustakaan, a student-built mini library project in 2022, endured as it continued to enrich literary experiences in local schools. Simultaneously, another cohort of students rallied behind Yayasan Pita Kuning, aligning with the foundation’s mission to combat childhood cancer, exemplifying a multifaceted approach towards community welfare.

Further underscoring their commitment to environmental stewardship, students actively participated in coral cleaning activities alongside Ocean Gardener, contributing to conservation efforts. In response to the challenges faced in Sumbawa, the Go the Extra Mile shoe drive emerged, providing footwear to empower local children, symbolising an extension of support for one of the student-led skatepark projects in the area.

Demonstrating unwavering dedication to environmental progress, the Scholars of Sustenance (SoS) initiative spearheaded by the Bali Island School community provided 1,148 meals, significantly curbing CO2 waste by an impressive 519.13 kg. This reduction equates to preserving 46.35 days’ worth of electricity, underscoring the tangible impact of their endeavors.

Edward Andrews, the CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) and Service as Action coordinator at Bali Island School, highlighted the transformative power ignited within students through Service as Action. He remarked, “The diverse projects in 2023, spanning humanity, sustainability and environmental impact reduction, mirror our commitment to effecting meaningful, sustainable change that positively influences both our surroundings and the community.”
