Carina Tan – Hotel Manager at Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta

Q: How would you describe your responsibilities in under 10 words?

A: Making guests feel like royalty and leading a team of hospitality rock stars! Missed by three words!

Q: What makes a typical day in your line of work?

A: It starts with a cup of coffee, followed by reviewing the daily operations report and checking in with department heads, oversee the delivery of the legendary service that is Mandarin Oriental, attend meetings and brainstorm with various department heads. No two days are the same, but the goal is always the same: to exceed guests’ expectations and ensure they have an unforgettable stay.

Q: What does your day off look like?

A: My day off would usually involve my nose buried in a book and spending quality time with my family. In the rare opportunities of a longer leave, I would be somewhere in the middle of the sea scuba diving.

Q: What’s the toughest part of your job?

A: The pressure to uphold the highest standards of service while juggling the needs and expectations of guests, colleagues and management. What entails is managing a sizable and diverse team, coming to difficult decisions, and making sure that every guest has a great and memorable experience, among other things. It requires a great deal of dedication, and hard work.

Q: What do you find most satisfying in your job?

A: Having the opportunity to create exceptional experiences and memories for guests, and seeing the positive impact we have made on their lives.

Q: Who has been the most influential figure in your career?

A: There are so many people who have contributed to where I am today. I am fortunate enough to have met so many successful leaders that have become my mentors, and also peers and colleagues who have taught me so much as a person and as a hotelier.

Q: Name one really special thing about your hotel?

A: The people. Everybody here is genuine in providing what is called the legendary service from the heart and it shows through their daily interactions with guests and the sincere eagerness to make the guests delighted.

Q: Tell us something about you that most people don’t know.

A: My education background is actually in IT, but I fell in love with the hospitality industry when I worked part time at a five-star hotel during college.

Q: If you had not taken this career path, what would you have chosen?

A: Most probably programming. I enjoy problem solving and troubleshooting, and programming gives me a lot of opportunities to exercise that hobby.
