Seasoned Commander
Describing Ed Brea’s long history in the hospitality industry as vast is an understatement. The American-born general manager has worked all over the world – from luxury resorts to commercial properties. His journey brought him to Jakarta, in one of the city’s most extensive projects, leading not one, but three properties all at once. We talked with Ed about his experience and his current hard work with the pre-opening team of Pan Pacific Jakarta, PARKROYAL Hotel Jakarta and PARKROYAL Serviced Suites Jakarta.
Q: A big part of your career was spent going through different regions all over Asia. Do you have one favourite region to work in?
A: Well, Southeast Asia would probably be my favourite, simply because of the warmth of the people and the weather. I grew up in Florida and Hawaii, and later moved to Australia, settling in Queensland. All of these places have something in common – the people are as warm as the weather.
Q: What made you decide to join Pan Pacific Jakarta, PARKROYAL Hotel Jakarta and PARKROYAL Serviced Suites Jakarta?
A: I actually have quite a breadth of experience with mixed-use properties. That’s why this opportunity really appealed to me. It’s not just about the three properties themselves; there are also numerous integrated components within Thamrin Nine complex as our location, such as the Agora Mall and the family entertainment complex. It’s a massive project that allows me to not only broaden my skill set but also leverage the knowledge I’ve gained from working with various stakeholders in the property industry. Joining Pan Pacific Hotels Group is an excellent fit for me at this stage of my career, and I’m thrilled to be here.
Q: Your cluster complex is nearing its opening, making everybody here quite excited. What can we expect from these properties in the near future?
A: We’re thrilled that all hotels are nearing its opening! PARKROYAL Serviced Suites Jakarta has already opened its doors on 8 January 2024, offering convenience and flexibility for guests seeking extended stays. Meanwhile, we eagerly anticipate the opening of our luxury property, Pan Pacific Jakarta, which will bring its graceful luxury hospitality and a unique blend of lavish living and a tranquil aerial haven. Together, at Pan Pacific Jakarta, PARKROYAL Hotel Jakarta and PARKROYAL Serviced Suites Jakarta, we’re committed to delivering exceptional service and creating unforgettable moments for our guests. Stay tuned for exciting updates as we prepare to welcome you!
Q: You have worked with the biggest names in hospitality. Do you have any advice for budding hoteliers trying to make it in this industry?
A: It’s not an easy business, you know, but it’s a passion. It’s a labour of love. If you enjoy working with people, teaching and serving others, it’s a fantastic industry to be in. Patience is crucial; success doesn’t happen overnight. There’s a lot to learn, but it can be incredibly rewarding. If you’re looking for a long-term career path, it’s a great choice.
Q: Lastly, what excites you most about living in Jakarta?
A: Definitely the food! I’ve always loved Indonesian cuisine, and now even living here, I can’t seem to get enough of it. I just need to exercise more and keep up with my fitness regime to counteract that indulgence. But it’s not just the food; the people here are so warm and engaging. Every day is a joy to be here.
