Preserving the Heritage
With decades of experience across Southeast Asia, Ed Brea brings his passion for heritage, hospitality and people to The Meru Sanur and Bali Beach Hotel, The Heritage Collection. He shares what drew him to Bali, his love for its culture and how the island’s natural warmth continues to inspire his journey.
Q: What inspired you to join The Meru Sanur and Bali Beach Hotel, The Heritage Collection?
A: The appeal of these hotels lies not only in their location within a special economic zone focused on medical tourism but also in their deep connection to Indonesia’s legacy–where historical significance and culture are intricately intertwined. Located in “The Sanur”, the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) includes The Meru Sanur, Bali Beach Hotel, The Heritage Collection, Bali Beach Convention Center and the Bali International Hospital. These facilities, combining advanced science and tradition, establish “The Sanur” as a significant landmark that extends beyond traditional tourism destination.
Q: Being the tallest building in Bali with rich history, what makes Bali Beach Hotel, The Heritage Collection distinctive?
A: The hotel honours the vision of Indonesia’s Founding Father, President Soekarno, who had a deep connection to Bali and was committed to preserving and promoting Indonesia’s cultural heritage for future generations. Established in 1966 as Indonesia’s National Hotel, it has long been a symbol of tradition and national pride. In recent years, the hotel underwent a complete restoration, not only returning it to its original architectural intentions but also modernising into a luxurious destination that seamlessly blends timeless elegance with historical significance. The unique breathtaking views, coupled with its rich legacy as a landmark of Indonesia’s hospitality and cultural heritage, make the hotel special.
Q: Among the many beautiful aspects of The Meru Sanur and Bali Beach Hotel, The Heritage Collection, what is your favourite so far?
A: The incredible experiences are countless, but if I had to choose, first, the smallest suite at The Meru Sanur, an all-suite resort, impresses with 83sqm, offering a true sense of tropical luxury. The serene surroundings create an unparalleled atmosphere of relaxation.
Secondly, from the top of the Bali Beach Hotel, The Heritage Collection, the views stretch south toward Sanur and north to the harbour, with white sandy beaches and the open sea. Unlike other oceanfront destinations, here, you get a breathtaking perspective of the shoreline that changes every day. And then there’s the sunrise. Each morning, I look out to the east and witness the beautiful sun rising over Sanur.
Q: You have spent many years working throughout Southeast Asia, what do you love most about the region?
A: Aside from the incredible food, which is fantastic throughout Southeast Asia, what stands out the most to me is the warmth of the people. I appreciate the natural hospitality ingrained in the culture. Here in Bali, hospitality comes naturally; it’s not something that needs to be taught—it’s simply part of who they are. It’s wonderful to see how effortlessly they create meaningful connections, which sets this special place apart. The difference between hospitality in Bali and other destinations is that here, it feels instinctive—an innate part of their culture and spirit.
Q: What excites you the most about living in Bali?
A: For me, the deep spiritual connection I feel here that puts my mind at ease. Having lived in many large Asian cities that face challenges, particularly regarding air quality, Bali offers a refreshing change. Every day, I wake up to breathtaking sunrises, fresh air and a peaceful environment.
