Gaile Lok opens up about her journey into modelling, her love for Bali, balancing life as a model and a mother, and her secrets to beauty and wellness.
Q: How did you first get into the world of modelling?
A: I started modelling at the age of 14 when I was approached by an Italian photographer on the street. He asked if I would be interested in participating in a fashion editorial spread for an Italian magazine. At that time, I didn’t have an agency, so he introduced me to one. That introduction was pivotal; it opened doors I never imagined, and that’s how my journey in modelling began. It was a whirlwind experience, and looking back, it was serendipitous. The experience taught me a lot about resilience and adapting quickly to new environments.
Q: How do you stay grounded and maintain a positive mindset amidst the pressures of being a public figure?
A: I am fortunate to have wonderful childhood friends and family who help me stay grounded. It’s easy being myself around them, and they treat me no different from when I was young and will call me out and set me straight when needed. I’m the same person off-camera and on – minus the nice hair, makeup and clothes I wear at work.
Q: You are calling Bali your second home now. What is it about this island that you like the most?
A: Bali is a huge island which offers a different vibe in each area. It’s incredibly diverse, and I love that I can travel an hour in each direction and find something unique, like the stunning ocean cliffs in Uluwatu or the lush jungle greens in Ubud. There’s amazing food, nightlife, surfing, yoga, shopping and massages on the island. The island has a magical quality; it’s like having multiple worlds within one place. The warmth and hospitality of the people make it even more special.
Q: How do you balance your professional life with your personal life, especially being a mother?
A: I keep my professional life and private life very separate. When I’m at home, I’m not a model; I’m just a mom who makes breakfast and takes her child to school like everyone else. I need to create this distinction to ensure I’m present for my family. Communication also plays an important role, along with having a me time when needed.
Q: Can you share some of your beauty and wellness routines that keep you looking radiant?
A: My beauty and wellness routine is quite holistic and involves several practices. I do yoga regularly, which helps with both physical fitness and mental clarity. Saunas and ice baths are great for rejuvenation and improving circulation. Sunscreen is a must, and I also indulge in face masks to keep my skin hydrated and glowing. Chinese soups are a staple in my diet; they’re nutritious and comforting. Massages are wonderful for relaxation and easing muscle tension. Of course, I enjoy a good glass of wine and prioritise getting good sleep, as it’s essential for overall health and wellbeing.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring models who look up to you?
A: Focus on yourself rather than on others. Surround yourself with people who support you and are always honest with you. Respect the elder models before you and guide the younger ones when needed. Modelling can be a great opportunity for you to find unknown hidden passions and talents. Since modelling is not always permanent, consider your future strategy.
