In Bali where swimwear is basically a staple fashion item, the name Nico Genze rings true. Nico is of German descent but has long called Indonesia his home. He discovered his passion for fashion back in his university days when he gave his business major a go. Realising that swimwear design was his true calling, Nico moved to Florence to study at Polimoda before continuing his journey to New York to study at FIT.
Nico’s undeniable skills earned him a magna cum laude and landed him remarkable stints at famed brands Victoria’s Secret and Jockey in New York City. After honing his skills in the Big Apple for a while, Nico decided to return to his roots and create his own brainchild in Indonesia.
Thanks to his genuine love for fashion and his knack for uniqueness and trendsetting creativity, Nico was able to create the now-coveted Niconico Mare swimwear company. The first designer to bring glam swimwear to Bali’s tropical resort scene, the brand immediately won the hearts of beach regulars. Now Niconico Mare has a strong brand presence in more than 20 countries with flagship stores in Jakarta and Bali.
Other than hard work, Nico credits luck for his success. “You have to be hard working, and introduce something unique that differentiates you from your competitors,” says Nico. “The second thing is luck. Having the right product at the right time.”
These days Nico finds himself occasionally revisiting his old hobby of painting and working on his crafts, which can be seen on the walls of his Art Villas including the Niconico Mansion in Petitenget and Villa Niconico at Berawa Beach.
