Novi Samodro

Q: With your extensive experience in various roles within the hospitality industry, what inspired you to pursue a career in hotel management?
A: It stems from my passion for creating exceptional guest experiences. I believe that hotel management offers a unique blend of operational and leadership challenges that allow me to utilise my skills in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The opportunity to oversee the day-to-day functions of a hotel, manage staff and ensure smooth operations while maintaining high standards of service and quality resonates deeply with me. Additionally, I am drawn to the ever-evolving nature of the hospitality industry, which presents a constant need for innovation and adaptability.

Q: Transitioning from director of sales and marketing to general manager, what skills or experiences from your previous role do you find most valuable in leading a hotel operation?
A: The skills I gained as part of the sales and marketing department, including communication, leadership, strategic planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, operational knowledge, customer focus, financial management, team management and adaptability, are all essential for leading a hotel operation effectively – a solid foundation for my transition to general manager.

Q: You’re a very busy person. what do you do on your day-off?
A: As a busy general manager, I don’t have a lot of spare time, but when I do, I enjoy spending it with my family and friends. I’m a bit of a foodie, so I love trying out new restaurants and experimenting with new recipes in my own kitchen. I also enjoy travelling and exploring new places, whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or a longer vacation. I find that spending time with my dogs is a great way to unwind and relax. They’re always happy to see me, and they never fail to put a smile on my face.

Q: What leadership qualities do you believe are essential for driving success in the hospitality industry? A: Good communication, adaptability, emotional quotient, problem-solving skill, business acumen, customer orientation, strategic thinking, integrity and continuous learning – these leadership qualities are paramount in the industry. They enable leaders to effectively manage their teams, make informed decisions and deliver exceptional guest experiences that drive loyalty and profitability.

Q: Managing diverse teams is a critical aspect of hotel management. How do you approach team building and fostering a collaborative work environment?
A: Emphasise communication, recognise and celebrate individual contribution, create a positive work environment, led by example and focus on continuous learning and development. By incorporating these strategies, I create a positive and productive space where diverse teams can thrive and contribute to the success of the hotel.

Q: Based on your experience, tell us one fun fact about the hospitality industry that not many people know.
A: There’s one that’s probably not that big of a secret, but one that we all enjoy as hoteliers. We are often the first to experience a new product, whether it’s a new food item, a spa treatment, or a unique amenity, allowing us to fine-tune them before they are released to our guests. You may call it free-testers, but all year long, for the whole hotel employee.
