To out-luxe the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is not an easy feat, but the brand’s latest 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S680 manages to do just that and more. The ultra-lavish stretch sedan offers an array of high-end features; including a twin-turbo V-12 engine and all-wheel drive.
THE LOOK
Based on the redesigned W223 S-Class launched late last year, the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S680 rolls on the longest of the three platforms exclusively developed for the new series. The stretched body makes it ideal for being chauffeured, especially with the optional reclining and massaging rear seats, which beckon riders to relax and live their best lives. The stately sedan has been engineered to receive VPAM VR10 certification; the highest level of ballistic protection for a civilian vehicle, meaning it can withstand gunshots and explosions. This makes this sophisticated sedan highly suitable for those in need of maximum protection, such as politicians, heads of state, as well as public figures, all while being bathed in all the luxury the three-pointed star can offer.
The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S680 has a seven-inch longer wheelbase than its predecessor, the Benz-branded S-class sedan, which provides even more stretch-out space inside its leather-lined cabin. All models come with exquisite leather on virtually every interior surface; a 64-colour interior ambient lighting system; heated and ventilated front seats with massage and four-position memory settings; heated rear seats with power adjustments and massage; an air ionizing system with a signature fragrance; and a panoramic sunroof.
From a warm welcome to a “hot stone” massage, every moment in a Maybach is time well spent. The legroom is expansive, with room to recline as you enjoy the extensive amenities. Twin power executive seats flank a centre seat or business console. Active LED lighting, gesture control and a virtual voice assistant anticipate, learn and respond with a natural feel. Thirty speakers include in-seat resonators to deliver Burmester® High-End 4D sound you can hear and feel. Sound can be tuned to individual seats as well, with ear-level speakers available to guide the driver discreetly.
THE PERFORMANCE
As mentioned above, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S680 is powered by a hefty 621-hp 6.0-litre V-12 and comes with Mercedes’ signature 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. An air suspension and an active sound cancellation system are both standard in the new model, which helps the car deliver a silky, ultra-quiet ride; the S-class also offers rear-wheel steering which should help with navigating this big sedan through tight city streets.
The S680’s natural environment is at a sedate pace on city streets, where its low rev refinement comes to the fore. But it also makes very decent progress out on the open road, where the sophisticated steering and 4Matic system make it much more agile than any car of its size has the right to be.
THE VERDICT
Incredibly refined, with strong performance and outstanding road-holding, especially for such a large sedan, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S680 offers a truly world-class ride and exclusive passenger experience.
