“TRANSITIONS”, a Nikola Kostic Exhibition at John Hardy Boutique and Gallery

Bali’s culture and heritage take center stage in the Belgrade-born photographer’s exhibition.

“TRANSITIONS,” will be presented at the John Hardy Boutique and Gallery in Seminyak. The exhibition, in collaboration with NYAMAN Gallery, invites viewers to explore the intricate dance between shadow and light, tradition and modernity.

The presentation captures Bali’s essence, showcasing Kostic’s unique technique of printing his artworks on clear acrylic plates, reminiscent of the shadows cast by the traditional Wayang Kulit shadow puppets. This artistic approach adds depth to his images, much like the glass painting tradition deeply rooted in Indonesian culture.

In the village of Nagasepaha, near Singaraja, Bali, the art of glass painting has evolved from depicting Wayang stories to capturing the essence of daily life. The exhibition features a prominent theme—kite flying, a deeply rooted cultural practice in Bali. Kites, believed to carry messages to the gods and spirits, hold significant cultural importance. Nikola’s work beautifully captures the chaos and adrenaline of Bali’s kite festivals, showcasing the vibrant colors that adorn the skies and the interconnectedness of the community that keeps this tradition alive.

Running from 14 December 2023 – 20 February 2024, this free-entry exhibition invites guests to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Bali’s culture and heritage. Visitors to the John Hardy Gallery in Seminyak can also participate in glass painting workshops.
