Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2024 Returns to Ignite Minds and Celebrate Community

One of Asia’s biggest literature festivals is back again this year with a profound theme; “Satyam Vada Dharmam Chara”, meaning “Speak the Truth, Practice Kindness.”

From 23 until 27 October 2024, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) is back with renewed vigour. Currently in its 21st year, the festival remains a shining light for those who are passionate about literature, seeking the truth, and being creative, providing a four-day immersive experience filled with words, wisdom, and thought-provoking discussions.

Set against the lush backdrop of Ubud, Bali’s cultural heart, UWRF 2024 presents an extraordinary lineup of authors, journalists, artists, and activists from across the globe. With enchanting venues as their stage, participants will engage in thought-provoking talks, intimate literary dinners and mesmerising performances.

Recognised as Southeast Asia’s leading celebration of literature and ideas, the festival brings together talents from Indonesia, India, Malta, the Netherlands and beyond. It offers an unparalleled opportunity for attendees to connect with literary luminaries, visionaries and changemakers, fostering cross-cultural dialogue that enriches both the mind and soul.

One of the festival’s highly anticipated speakers is Maria Ressa, co-recipient of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, who will delve into the evolving role of journalism in the age of social media and AI. Her reflections on truth in an era of misinformation promise to be both insightful and urgent. Another highlight is Soesilo Toer, who will share poignant memories of his brother, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Indonesia’s iconic literary figure and intellectual giant.

This year’s lineup is also brimming with some of Indonesia’s most celebrated writers. Literary titan Dee Lestari, known for her contemporary fiction, will offer fresh perspectives, while acclaimed author Ratih Kumala, best known for Gadis Kretek, will explore the intersection of history and storytelling. Other notable names include Ibe S. Palogai and Norman Erikson Pasaribu, an award-winning poet and 2022 International Booker Prize nominee.

Adding local flavour to the festival, Balinese figures like Niluh Djelantik, a prominent senator and activist, and Bagus Ari Saputra, the founder of Ubud Book Club, will share their unique perspectives on culture, community, and activism.

Global literary voices will further enrich the festival. Among them is Jack Edwards, the UK’s most-followed BookTuber and Goodreads sensation, alongside international authors like Claire Kilroy and Laura Elizabeth Woollett, whose works push boundaries and provoke deep thought.

UWRF 2024 promises to be more than just a literary event, fusing literature, activism, and cultural heritage. It is a celebration of storytelling as a force for change, a call to action for the truth, and a monument to the enduring power of words to shape the world.
